Outdoor Adventure Scotland

Welcome to the wonderful world of Via Ferrata or literally  “Iron Way”. Via Ferratas were metal supported climbing routes used in Northern Italy traveling over the Alps by soldiers during the war. Today they’re best known as an outdoor leisure sport enjoyed over Italy and the Alps, and now – Scotland!

Vertical descents are extremely proud to be the first Scottish organisation to build our very own Via Ferrata right here in Fort William. Set next to the third biggest waterfall in Scotland, the Grey Mairs Tail, the view is truly spectacular. If you’re looking for what to do in Fort William – look no further than this one of a kind activity. What’s more it’ perfectly safe and you don’t have to be a trained mountaineer to get involved!

Push Yourself from your Comfort Zone

Our Via Ferrata course allows those who would not typically be able to climb to such heights to enjoy an adrenaline filled experience with the added security of cables, steps and ladders all connected to a harness provided by Vertical Descents. We pride ourselves on our vigilance to safety and your team will be guided the whole way by one of our experienced and highly trained team members. We only offer the best technical equipment and everyone will be connected to a safety cable throughout the whole experience.

Are you ready to push yourself to the adventure of a lifetime? Via Ferrata is different from typical rock climbing and you experience the amazing sense of freedom of being completely exposed on a rock face without being attached to a belay, instead you climb independently using the iron steps in the rock face.  You will be lead through a stunning 500 meter journey around a bedrock amphitheatre that has only just been made accessible to the public thanks to our course. The breath-taking views of Scotland’s third largest waterfall can be seen at all angles and will provide stunning visual memories that will last for years to come.
